14.07.2007 Istanbul street markets

Continued from 03.05.2007 CTK Law

Wednesday 11 July 2007 - The Okan Bayulgen show on NTV this evening featured Özlem Türköne, a young AKP candidate for the up coming elections. She is notably female, young and headscarf free and on this particular programme cause a minor debate because she asked Okan to call her Özlem Hanım rather than just Özlem (Ms. Özlem instead of just Özlem). All interesting for my Turkish learning: Bu Sizi İlgilendiriyor

Saturday 14 July 2007 - visited the Organic Market in Sisli (sounds like shishly); typical products were fruit, vegetables, olive oils and honey. We interviewed Leyla from Buğday www.bugday.org which helps organise ecological markets. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Also, this was our first day with our new camera bought in New York. Gokce almost shared her tea with the new machine. New words included - ugur bocegi (ladybird), sekerpare (a small cake with syrup), onluk (apron), kayisi (apricot type fruit), bogurtlen (blackberry), enginar (artichoke), ahududu (raspberry). Bumped into Yigit from The Drugstore at Maydrom Sports centre.

Asli with Fehmican and Gokce.

15 July 2007 - Dolapdere Sunday street market...with elections coming up we asked people who they would vote for. The AKP were easily the most popular choice, though considering AKP leader Tayyip Erdogan comes from the local Kasimpasa neighbourhood it was an expected response.

We had an interesting chat with this store holder as I tested my Turkish. The photos may look heated, but the situation was friendly if boisterous.
This chap will vote for Tayyip and loves Ataturk. I asked him how he could vote for a Prime Minister who obviously doesn't overly appreciate the principles of Ataturk? He replied that of course Tayyip loves Ataturk. I left it at that.

Tuesday 17 July 2007 - This is Fehmican, Didem Engin and myself. Didem was standing for parliament for as a CHP candidate in Sariyer region of Istanbul... We interviewed her and I tried to communicate in Turkish. Didem was a consummate professional while my Turkish was embarrassingly awful. Here's a link of Didem on Okan Bayulgen's NTV Bu Sizi Ilgilendiriyor show: http://youtube.com/watch?v=rwmEtCclfSw
